Boys and Girls Club Receives New Grants

Posted by rwilson on December 9, 2013

Well, winter is definitely upon us in the northwoods. With new seasons come new opportunities! Here are a few of the exciting new programs the Boys and Girls Club of Lac Courte Oreilles is running this winter.

Immersion (via the Sea Research Foundation)

Immersion is a group mentoring program centered around interactive lessons about the wonders of the sea. Think the ocean is too far away to be relevant for a group of kids in Wisconsin? Think again! Out of the kids participating in this program, two will be selected to go to Mystic, CT for a camp centered around sea research. How cool is that?! This week, two Club staff will be traveling to Mystic, CT for training for this program. When they come back, the Boys and Girls Club will be actively seeking potential mentors for this program. If you or somebody you know is interested in participating in this unique program, contact the Boys and Girls Club (715-634-4030).

Nordic Kids

Nordice Kids is a cross country skiing program for kids. This program is actually run by another organization, but Boys and Girls Club will help to subsidize the cost for parents whose kids are participating. The cost is $25 up front (rentals included) for Club members (to become a Club Membe, come into the Club to fill out forms and pay the $10 annual membership fee). At the end of the program, if the student participates throughout the entire program, the $25 will be refunded. This is a terrific way to spark an interest in skiing for kids! This program will typically take place on Sundays. For more infornation, contact Anna Amparo at the Boys and Girls Club (715-634-4030).

Wisconsin After 3

This is an after school program with two main components: 1) Participation in our daily Power Hour activities (i.e. homework help, tutoring, Healthy Bingo, SPARK, etc.); and 2) Participation in an online program called STRIDE. This program involves answering grade level questions to earn coins, which the students can then use to play games on the website. In addition to being a fun way to learn, STRIDE gives us the opportunity to compete against other Boys and Girls Clubs across Wisconsin in terms of points earned.

Ice Skating

Our ice rink will be ready very soon! The Club provides skates, helmets, and pads. This is not a grant-related program as of right now, but still very fun!
